Episode 114
#111. A Life-Changing Bible Study Method for Any Age or Stage: Get the Word Out
Today I'm joined by Betsy Corning, the author and developer of Get the Word Out. If you've listened to us for any amount of time, you can tell that we believe studying God's Word is absolutely transformational and pivotal for us in our motherhood. It's the again we keep coming back to!
Springtime is often a time that churches and small groups evaluate the study they'll select in the new ministry year. We wanted to bring you this option that is so flexible that it can work for any stage or any age of believer.
A few episodes ago we talked about one of my favorite tools, the color coding system. Find that here:

this summer we had a dinner and I got to hear testimonies from women
2
:that said.
3
:Get the word
4
:out changed my life.
5
:it absolutely changed
and transformed my life.
6
:And these are women that
7
:grew up in
8
:the church studying God's word,
9
:but they said, I've never had an
experience like getting into God's word
10
:for myself as I did with get the Word out.
11
:Stephanie: This
12
:is for every age, every stage
13
:of believer.
14
:It's for men, for
15
:women.
16
:New moms.
17
:Get the word out can be tailored for you.
18
:Speaker: There are the
joyful agains, our children.
19
:Shout on the swings, the exhausting
agains of cooking and laundry and
20
:the difficult agains of discipline.
21
:So much of what we do
as mothers is on repeat.
22
:So what if we woke up with clarity,
knowing which agains we were called
23
:to and went to bed believing we
are faithful in what matters most.
24
:We believe God's word is
the key to untangle from the
25
:confusion and overwhelm we feel.
26
:Let's look up together to embrace a
motherhood full of freedom and joy.
27
:Steph: Welcome to the Again podcast from
Entrusted Ministry I'm Stephanie Hickox,
28
:and today I'm joined by Betsy Corning, the
author and developer of Get the Word Out.
29
:If you've listened to us for any amount
of time, you can tell that we believe
30
:studying God's word and spending time
with Him is absolutely transformational
31
:and pivotal for us in our motherhood.
32
:It's the, again, we keep coming back to.
33
:Springtime is often a time that
churches and small groups evaluate
34
:the study they'll select in the
35
:new Ministry year.
36
:we wanted to bring you this option
that is so flexible that it can work
37
:for any stage or any age of believer.
38
:A few episodes ago we talked
about one of my favorite
39
:tools, the color coding system.
40
:I'll link that in the show notes as
well as the whole Get the Word Out
41
:program in case you wanna learn more.
42
:And as always, you're welcome
to email me with any questions.
43
:If you haven't checked out
our Dwelling Place podcast
44
:yet, we hope you do so because
45
:We're doing all we can to equip
you to dwell with the Lord.
46
:In every episode, we
read scripture over you.
47
:Pray over you and your kids because
we know you're doing all the things,
48
:but this is the one we wanna
make sure taps the list.
49
:We
50
:are excited to talk
51
:to you today about Get
52
:the Word Out.
53
:It is
54
:a Bible study curriculum that helps you
develop your own devotional lifestyle.
55
:Betsy and David spent
56
:probably about four decades
57
:developing this amazing system,
and it's really absolutely unique
58
:We're never
59
:gonna regret a moment
60
:that we've
61
:spent in the word.
62
:We want you to feel that,
63
:There's a
64
:lot of tools and resources that I could
utilize, but I don't have to use them
65
:all.
66
:I can really tailor a system
67
:that works for me right now so often
68
:we have these lofty goals at
the beginning of the year or at
69
:the beginning of a school year.
70
:And then we
71
:taper off.
72
:But
73
:we find that when you've committed
yourself with a tool or a resource
74
:like this, you're much less
likely to fall off the rails.
75
:But even if you do, let's say
you have a baby in the middle of
76
:the year,
77
:maybe you can't dig in at
78
:the same rate or pace
79
:that you were,
80
:but you'll
81
:know exactly where to come back to it
82
:And we just want you
83
:to feel equipped
84
:and ready to jump in and
study the word yourself.
85
:Personally, I've been so blessed
86
:by get the word out and some of
87
:the tools that I've
used and I haven't even
88
:implemented all of them in my
89
:life.
90
:So I am really excited and
91
:Betsy,
92
:for you to share.
93
:How the Lord led you to develop
94
:each
95
:one of these
96
:And it was neat this summer
we had a dinner and I got to
97
:hear testimonies from women
98
:that said.
99
:Get the word
100
:out changed my life.
101
:it absolutely changed
and transformed my life.
102
:And these are women that
103
:grew up in
104
:the church studying God's word,
105
:but they said, I've never had an
experience like getting into God's word
106
:for myself as I did with get the Word out.
107
:Aunt Betsy, where would you like to
start in sharing how the Lord helped
108
:you develop this amazing system?
109
:Mm-hmm.
110
:Betsy: Well, thanks Stephanie.
111
:You did
112
:say that we've been doing
this for decades, so it is
113
:a tried
114
:and true thing for us and we're delighted
115
:to share it with people.
116
:We first piloted this, I would
say probably 22, 23 years
117
:ago in the Chicago area, and.
118
:People are still doing it, but it can
be complex when you first hear about it.
119
:But we start very simply,
120
:and the way
121
:that I started it probably 50
122
:years
123
:ago, 40 years ago, whatever I
don't wanna give away my age was I
124
:was a young mom, uh, with a
125
:toddler and one on
126
:the way,
127
:and I was one of those
moms that was very sick.
128
:So, you know.
129
:A lot of morning sickness,
morning, noon, and night.
130
:So not just morning sickness.
131
:And I would put down my toddler for
her afternoon nap at at lunch, after
132
:lunch, and I would just lay down with
my Bible because I thought, I've always
133
:wanted to read through the Bible.
134
:I don't feel well.
135
:I don't wanna go anywhere.
136
:I can't go anywhere.
137
:My husband and I only had one car and
138
:The Lord had me stationed there, so I
decided I'm gonna open my Bible like I
139
:always wanted to, and I'm gonna read until
my little one wakes up and I would be able
140
:to read for an hour, an hour and a half,
141
:which is
142
:a luxury to some.
143
:But honestly, I was laying down
when I was reading and the Lord
144
:really, uh, restored me in fact.
145
:When that little
146
:baby
147
:was born, we moved when he was six
weeks old to Chicago and I kept reading.
148
:So, you know, you can do it,
you can do it even when you have
149
:toddlers and babies, if you're
150
:determined to
151
:do it.
152
:Now, if you're a really organized
person, you like colors, you
153
:like
154
:systems, I
155
:mean, this is really for you.
156
:But really
157
:the idea is that you're communing with
the Lord, that you open the word and
158
:you get to know more about who he is.
159
:So we call it get the Word out,
developing a devotional lifestyle.
160
:We're gonna teach 18 skills about
how to study the Bible and go deep
161
:with the Lord's
162
:word.
163
:But you don't have to do all those 18 all
164
:at the same
165
:time.
166
:You're gonna discover that
167
:you sort of gravitate towards one or
more, and maybe one year or two years
168
:you're gonna really dig into those
things and maybe a different year
169
:you're gonna do something a little
different, which will all make sense
170
:when we
171
:continue on with
172
:this.
173
:But for now,
174
:I just wanna say that at
that point in my life.
175
:I really, really wanted to read
the Bible all the way through
176
:because I had never done it before.
177
:And I read through the Bible that
year and I learned so, so much.
178
:But I had a lot of confusion and a lot
of questions ' cause I didn't have much
179
:guidance and it wasn't chronological.
180
:So the next
181
:year I thought, well,
I'll just, do it again.
182
:But life got, ahead of
me and I didn't do it.
183
:So I was, down on myself, why
couldn't I do it, you know?
184
:And then the next year I
decided I would do it again.
185
:I realized I really had to have some
sort of system, some sort of plan that
186
:if I did get off for a time, that I
would come back to it and I could,
187
:and I would know exactly what to do.
188
:I wouldn't just randomly open up my Bible
and magically, be on where I needed to be.
189
:There needs to be
190
:a plan, there needs to be a
method to what we're doing so
191
:that what we're learning and
192
:reading
193
:makes sense and, contributes to the
whole, the whole Council of God's word.
194
:So when we
195
:look
196
:at the Bible.
197
:We know that
198
:the Bible is, God's revelation
199
:of
200
:himself to us, and why wouldn't
we wanna know more of who he is?
201
:That's
202
:the delight.
203
:Nobody's gonna check your
workbooks or say, you
204
:did something wrong.
205
:You made something the wrong color.
206
:Anything like that.
207
:It's all your own work before the
Lord for you to dig deep and delight
208
:in him, but to make it simple.
209
:All that you have to do at first is
just pick out a Bible that you wanna
210
:read, pick out a Bible that you wanna
read, and I've circulated between three.
211
:And this one happens to be
the New American standard.
212
:So I will do the New American
Standard for a while and I'll switch
213
:over to the ESV or the Legacy.
214
:And just because I like to see a
little bit different wording sometimes.
215
:And
216
:when I do get the word out
with friends, it's fun to have
217
:people use different versions.
218
:It's all great.
219
:You can see what different words
have been selected for translation.
220
:But I like to use a translation.
221
:In other words, a word for word
translation, not a paraphrase, such as
222
:the, the living Bible or the message,
although those can be helpful to
223
:read when they can give clarity to
something that you're thinking about.
224
:not specific translations, and
that's what we're looking for.
225
:So I picked out, uh, the Bible
to read and um, I decided after
226
:a couple years I really needed to
have a read it chronologically.
227
:And that made all the
difference in the world
228
:to
229
:understanding the Bible,
to read it chronologically.
230
:So when people do get the word out,
231
:this
232
:is the
233
:system.
234
:It has three books, uh, workbooks, the
Old Testament and the New Testament.
235
:But, what you also get with that
is three chronological schedules.
236
:And they are a one year Bible
reading schedule all on one page.
237
:Tiny, tiny printing.
238
:A
239
:two a year
240
:schedule,
241
:and
242
:a three year
243
:schedule.
244
:Now a friend of mine and I right now
are doing the three year schedule only.
245
:We're gonna take six years, 'cause we're
going super, super deep, especially
246
:through particular books of the Bible.
247
:But doing that will
248
:help put
249
:the Bible
250
:In order for you so that you
can understand the history.
251
:And we can also study why
it was put together the way
252
:it was for the Jewish Bible.
253
:But for our sakes in this study, we are
doing it with the chronological reading.
254
:Another thing we
255
:do is, we color code the Bible, and we're
gonna get into that in a little bit.
256
:But what I wanna say about
reading through the Bible, once
257
:you've read through the Bible.
258
:Everything will just seem different.
259
:You, you'll have a different
perspective on life.
260
:You will look at things
261
:differently.
262
:And what is the perspective on life?
263
:It's, it's that God is with me.
264
:God is near me.
265
:God cares about me.
266
:God
267
:is compassionate.
268
:God is
269
:just,
270
:God is holy.
271
:And I need to live my
life in a certain way.
272
:And I need him.
273
:I need him for salvation,
I can't earn my salvation.
274
:, By his grace, I am drawn to him and
see my need of salvation to repent
275
:for forgiveness
276
:of sin.
277
:All of these things will
come together and make sense.
278
:Stephanie: And speaking of
279
:having the word illuminated, my
favorite bible that I've found
280
:is the Illuminated Bible by
281
:Crossway.
282
:And they just do a beautiful job
of adding these gold etchings.
283
:And then there's plenty of room.
284
:On the side of the page
285
:often they'll pull a scripture
286
:and it's designed so beautifully.
287
:But I find I
288
:have plenty of room to
289
:do the color coding
and then also to add my
290
:notes in
291
:the margins.
292
:And when I do this, sometimes
293
:I think, when I'm no longer here on
this earth, I hope that this is a
294
:gift that my kids.
295
:Or my grandkids would
296
:be able to look back and see,
you know, my notes on them or
297
:when I write their name and
298
:the margin of things
299
:that I've been praying
300
:for them or praying in
301
:myself.
302
:And this resource is also from Crossway,
303
:but
304
:sometimes it feels a little,
you know, different to
305
:have the Bible
306
:divided into sections.
307
:But this is a neat resource
308
:because
309
:There's lines, pages.
310
:So you have plenty of room
311
:to put those notes too.
312
:And so perhaps
313
:this could be a step
314
:before you organize a little bit
315
:to go
316
:into the, get the word out books.
317
:But,
318
:I was just, studying acts
319
:with my Bible study and there's
a chapter in there during
320
:the shipwreck and there's a
321
:lot of nautical
322
:terms that I wasn't as familiar with.
323
:And so I could write the
324
:definitions out there.
325
:And, and maybe talk about like how
long of a distance was this and
326
:just to put
327
:little notes in that
enhanced my study of that.
328
:Sometimes I like a place to add those
little details before I get into,
329
:the, get the word out tools also.
330
:Betsy: We'll talk some more
about that too as we go on.
331
:What we really wanna do is get
you excited about getting a solid
332
:devotional life with the Lord.
333
:It's between you and him.
334
:You can do this with a
335
:friend, you can do it with your
husband, you can do it with
336
:your teenagers
337
:or even younger.
338
:But, really be praying about this.
339
:How can I,
340
:get closer to
341
:the
342
:Lord this
343
:year?
344
:I take a survey every year with
the moms that I teach and they
345
:always say, I want to be a more
godly mom, and how do we do that?
346
:We get in the word and so we develop
this system for people and, if you're
347
:thinking about that, praying about
that, we're gonna give you several
348
:little episodes here to sort of
draw you in on what it's all about,
349
:Speaker 2: We know you're busy, mama.
350
:So we are truly grateful you joined us for
this episode of again, if you're looking
351
:for more information about building your
home on the foundation of Jesus Christ,
352
:head to www dot Entrusted Ministries
dot com to learn more about our study
353
:for moms Entrusted with a child's Heart.
354
:This scripture saturated study
has blessed families around the
355
:world, and we want it for you too.
356
:Before you go, I want to pray this
benediction over you from Second
357
:Thessalonians one 11 through 12.
358
:We're rooting for you to this end.
359
:We always pray for you that our God
may make you worthy of his calling
360
:and fulfill every resolve for good.
361
:And every work of faith by his power
so that the name of our Lord Jesus
362
:may be glorified in you and you
and Him according to the grace of
363
:our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
364
:Amen.
365
:Until we meet again.
