#112. The Christian Parenting Study Your Church Is Looking For: Why Entrusted with a Child’s Heart Helps YOU as a Pastor or Ministry Leader

We know a lot of churches and Ministries are thinking about the study they'll be using in the fall. We realize it takes a lot of research before a church commits to a year long study--as it should!

We're so thankful that churches are diligent to find truly biblical resources. We want to explain that Entrusted with a Child's Heart was created to help serve the church staff and provide a ministry for moms, setting the stage for Titus 2 discipleship to occur. This episode is something you could send a pastor, elder, or women's ministry leader to explain why you think and Entrusted would really bless your church!

It'll be brief, but hopefully it'll provide you with the main benefits of bringing this thorough, Scripture-saturated study to your church or group of moms.

Welcome to the Again podcast from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox.

3

:

We know a lot of churches and

Ministries are thinking about the

4

:

study they'll be using in the fall.

5

:

We also realize it takes a lot of

research and many conversations

6

:

to get a church on board to do

a year long study as it should.

7

:

We're so thankful that churches are

diligent to find truly biblical resources.

8

:

I'll link to our statement of

faith in the show notes so you

9

:

can know exactly where we stand.

10

:

But this episode is something you

could send a pastor or women's ministry

11

:

leader to explain why you think and

trusted would really bless your church.

12

:

It'll be brief, but hopefully it'll

provide you with the main benefits of

13

:

bringing this thorough scripture saturated

study to your church or group of moms.

14

:

I would say we are most closely

aligned with the parent parenting

15

:

philosophy of Paul Tripp.

16

:

His book Parenting is Phenomenal.

17

:

And was so like-minded

18

:

to our study Entrusted

with the child's heart.

19

:

Entrusted was written in 1999 by

Betsy Corning, along with being

20

:

a lifelong student of the word.

21

:

She has her master's in biblical studies.

22

:

She wanted to ensure that everything

she was promoting in a trusted,

23

:

truly aligned with the heart of God.

24

:

What sets Entrusted apart is the

length and the practicality of the

25

:

study, because it was written by a mom.

26

:

That often spent her days on kitchen

floors training her children day by day.

27

:

It really gets to the heart of what do

you do when it's not just theoretical or

28

:

philosophical, it's thoroughly practical

while remaining solidly biblical.

29

:

It's intentional, yet full of grace,

it's obedience focused, but all while

30

:

maintaining the heart of your child

seeking transformation and humility

31

:

in their hearts over behaviorism.

32

:

Entrusted with A Child's

Heart is a ministry to moms.

33

:

This nine month study takes a

deep dive into biblical parenting.

34

:

It will apply to every age

and every stage of parenting.

35

:

With every single lesson, we

provide 20 hour long lessons

36

:

that are full of scripture.

37

:

And after that, moms work out these

biblical truths in a small group setting,

38

:

so they're building real fellowship

within the walls of your church.

39

:

There's minimal homework because

we know that moms are doing all the

40

:

things, but we do have scripture memory.

41

:

Every week later, there's an opportunity

to have a discussion with their husbands

42

:

at home about how to practically

apply the principles they're learning.

43

:

We also have the Entrusted with

the Child's heart book for couples

44

:

for those wanting to work through

the same principles together.

45

:

And we recently recorded videos with

Betsy and David Corning that recap

46

:

each of these chapters so moms and

dads can watch these at home together.

47

:

Or you can start a couple's

group in your church.

48

:

Speaker 4: You might find it interesting

to learn that Betsy was asked to write

49

:

this study by her church leadership

because they realized they were spending

50

:

so much time counseling crisis situations.

51

:

They wondered if they could

prevent these situations from

52

:

occurring before they began.

53

:

As Betsy often says, in counseling

situations, we've got some scrambled

54

:

eggs, but we wanna make sure that we

don't add any more eggs to the pan.

55

:

But in many cases, we can prevent

the eggs from ever getting

56

:

cracked open in the first place.

57

:

No, we don't guarantee a prescription

for parenting or for marriage.

58

:

What we're about is helping parents and

families apply the wisdom of the Bible

59

:

so that even when the unexpected happens,

we can be steadfast and hold to Christ.

60

:

And what's really exciting is

that Entrusted doesn't just

61

:

transform moms and their parenting.

62

:

It gives them a foundation to

apply the word of God to every

63

:

aspect of their life, and that will

bring unity in your entire church.

64

:

So let me explain what I think

are some of the biggest benefits

65

:

for your church.

66

:

in hosting and Entrusted with a

child's heart group, number one,

67

:

you develop a shared language.

68

:

For example, often a question or

issue arises that can be simply

69

:

solved by discerning, is this a

biblical conviction, a personal

70

:

conviction, or a personal preference?

71

:

When the members of your church understand

this distinction, and they know that

72

:

we're called to be steadfast in regard

to biblical convictions, understanding

73

:

in regard to personal convictions.

74

:

And flexible in regard

to personal preferences.

75

:

You can clearly guide them in wisdom.

76

:

Personally, I have seen deep waters

calmed by this Clarity COVID-19.

77

:

Anyone.

78

:

A few years ago at a conference, I was

talking to a pastor that was explaining

79

:

a heartbreaking situation of divisiveness

going on with the moms of his church.

80

:

I looked at him and I said, these moms

are turning an issue that should be

81

:

a personal conviction, and they're

elevating it to the level of a

82

:

biblical conviction, and they shouldn't

be requiring that of each other.

83

:

And the light bulb went on as he told me.

84

:

You're right.

85

:

I have been so thankful for the clarity

that Entrusted has brought me over and

86

:

over as I've thought about how to approach

so many matters of unity in the church.

87

:

Steph: Another amazing

benefit of Entrusted.

88

:

Is that as a church, you are equipping

the key disciples in your body.

89

:

Most churches host leadership

trainings for their staff and

90

:

their small group leaders.

91

:

But did you know that a mom

might be spending the most time

92

:

discipling of anyone in your church?

93

:

There is more and more research coming

to light that the worldview that children

94

:

have when they're very young, even as

toddlers, is often a worldview that

95

:

will carry them through to adulthood.

96

:

And possibly to the end of their life.

97

:

And this means when a mom is

next to her toddler, you don't

98

:

want the counterfeit lies

99

:

of the culture or of social

media guiding her parenting.

100

:

You want it to be the word of God.

101

:

And when moms understand their

biblical role before the Lord and

102

:

when churches equip them for the

task, this partnership is powerful.

103

:

It doesn't guarantee an outcome.

104

:

Or make the Deb any easier, but it helps

a mother understand how crucial her

105

:

role is and the fruit of that is she can

joyfully serve her family in a way that

106

:

will bless your church for years to come.

107

:

It's the heart of multiplication.

108

:

Number three.

109

:

As I mentioned at the beginning,

Entrusted can lessen the amount of time.

110

:

Leaders in your church

do crisis counseling.

111

:

We know how many things are

vying for your attention.

112

:

But we want you to be able to focus on

ministering to your flock and preparing

113

:

to train them in the word not reinventing

the wheel and trusted won't alleviate

114

:

the need for all intervention, but it

can help parents in your congregation to

115

:

proactively point their families to Christ

instead of reactively dealing with issues.

116

:

Each lesson is like sitting in

a biblical counseling training.

117

:

These moms are learning how to apply

the word of God in their homes,

118

:

and they're also learning how to

encourage one another to follow

119

:

wholeheartedly after the Lord

120

:

even when it gets hard.

121

:

And that type of fellowship

122

:

will transform your church.

123

:

Number four, we found over and over

that Entrusted helps assimilate

124

:

new families into your church.

125

:

Moms are looking for fellowship.

126

:

They want a place to process

all they're doing at home.

127

:

And the struggles that they're

having when they know they can find

128

:

a place of wisdom and belonging at an

Entrusted group, they usually don't

129

:

just stay for the mom's ministry event.

130

:

They start bringing their

family to church on Sundays.

131

:

We've seen it time and time again.

132

:

People might be hesitant

to come through your doors.

133

:

For the first time for a church service.

134

:

But a moms group can make them feel safe

and loved in a less intimidating way.

135

:

And many moms have come to Christ

through this study because we begin with

136

:

building a foundation on Jesus Christ.

137

:

Because everything depends on him.

138

:

Number five, as I alluded to earlier,

the church has an opportunity to

139

:

proactively train their congregation,

not reactively, respond to the culture.

140

:

They won't just reactively respond

to the news issues of the day.

141

:

I heard a statistic.

142

:

That on average, we are seeing more

ads in a day than our grandparents

143

:

saw in their entire lifetime.

144

:

So much of this promises, quick

fixes for parenting, but very

145

:

little of it is in line with the

Bible, and that's just the ads

146

:

That isn't the news articles

and politicized agendas.

147

:

The church needs to speak loudly and

clearly, particularly for family life,

148

:

or we're allowing parents to be swept

away In the current of culture, it takes

149

:

intentional training for parents to

become resolute at raising their kids.

150

:

Christian.

151

:

Parenting is often hard, but it

doesn't have to be confusing,

152

:

when I think about the uphill

battle that Christian parents are

153

:

facing today, I picture parents.

154

:

Swimming through Whitewater Rapids,

it's coming at them with powerful force.

155

:

They're mentally and physically

weary from sorting through

156

:

all the lies and the truth.

157

:

Are you providing the parents at your

church with breath support for the

158

:

swim, or are you leaving them to be

swept away in the current of culture?

159

:

I am personally available

to answer any questions you

160

:

might have about our studies.

161

:

I'll link our website in the

show notes as well as my email.

162

:

You can connect with me that

way, or we could even set up

163

:

a call so I can explain why.

164

:

After almost 30 years of ministry,

we still have seen nothing.

165

:

With the depth and intentionality of

Entrusted with the child's heart So

166

:

that's my perspective, but I want you

to hear how powerful this study is

167

:

from a real women's ministry director.

168

:

This is from Sylvia Zider.

169

:

She leads the women at

Quorum Deo Bible Church.

170

:

And for years they've offered Entrusted

171

:

about every other year, and they'll have

about 150 ladies go through the study.

172

:

But they wanna make sure moms

keep applying the word of God.

173

:

And because every age

and stage is different.

174

:

Women repeat this over and over.

175

:

And it fits for moms that just found

out they're expecting all the way to

176

:

grandma's or school administrators,

anyone who has children in their life.

177

:

And that helps build the tightest

two model in your church because

178

:

the older women can attend and

pour into the younger women.

179

:

And instead of these young moms

looking to an algorithm for wisdom

180

:

and guidance, they learn to look to

the godly wise women in your church,

181

:

clinging to the timeless

truth of scripture.

182

:

Here's a little more

from Sylvia explaining

183

:

how the Lord has used Entrusted

184

:

Sylvia: oh, it's absolutely distinct

and I'm so thankful for that.

185

:

I think so often moms are driven towards

method right now and they want to look

186

:

at results of their children where

what I love most about Entrusted with a

187

:

Child's Heart is that it starts with God.

188

:

It starts with who he is and his character

and his nature and why we can trust the

189

:

Bible and why the Bible has to be the

foundation of everything that we do.

190

:

And then it funnels into our

commitment to obey the Bible.

191

:

And part of that includes our marriages.

192

:

So it's building the foundation wisely.

193

:

And I think about, how the Bible talks

about building your house rightly and

194

:

foundation matters and entrusted with a

child's heart emphasizes The Bible and

195

:

the authority of it and the goodness

of it and the rightness of it And that

196

:

it gets to have supreme value And so

that then lays the foundation for good

197

:

parenting and that's what sets it apart

because other studies blogs articles are

198

:

so quick to go to Instant gratification

and give you the five ways you can do

199

:

this and the four ways you can do this,

but That is so short sighted to biblical

200

:

living and so I just appreciate that

entrusted really forces us and allows us

201

:

the joy of Finding contentment and joy

and sufficiency in the word of God first.

202

:

Stephanie: Well said, I agree, such

a strong foundation is set how have

203

:

you seen women in your church grow

and their parenting through Entrusted?

204

:

Yes.

205

:

Sylvia: study is it's the ultimate

outreach opportunity too as a church,

206

:

because everyone's interested in raising,

they don't know it, they're wanting

207

:

to raise good kids, we want to raise

kids that know the Word of God, but

208

:

it's a way to get people in the doors.

209

:

Of the church that typically wouldn't

come into the church and they'll come

210

:

in and we've seen women get saved

Through entrusted with a child's heart.

211

:

And so that's of course our greatest joy

that they've suddenly committed their

212

:

life To the lordship of jesus christ.

213

:

And so that's beautiful.

214

:

That's astounding.

215

:

It's miraculous.

216

:

And so we're very thankful for that

The other thing that I see more than

217

:

anything is women Finding joy in the word

of God and parenting out of the Bible's

218

:

truth rather than the world's truth.

219

:

And I think that's the biggest

distinction is we're all over informed

220

:

we Can all go to the internet

and search up anything and find

221

:

anything to, answer those questions.

222

:

But we don't just want

answers, we want truth.

223

:

And so Entrusted with a Child's

Heart steers us away from worldly

224

:

wisdom, which we know is fleeting

and futile and unsatisfying, and

225

:

instead drives us towards the

biblical truth, which does satisfy.

226

:

And the coolest thing is watching

hundreds of women every year, as

227

:

we walk them through Entrusted with

a Child's Heart, seeing them grasp

228

:

it, seeing them get it, seeing them

Really see families transformed.

229

:

We've seen marriages healed because of it.

230

:

As women realize, I need

to do this with my husband.

231

:

This is a joint effort and

he can lead our family well.

232

:

And I'm going to learn

to trust him in that.

233

:

And we've seen a lot of that.

234

:

We've seen women find that the Bible gets

to have a place of priority in their life

235

:

because of taking the entrusted study.

236

:

And suddenly they realize I

can't parent without this.

237

:

It's not how do I fit the

Bible into my parenting?

238

:

It's transformational thinking.

239

:

Now, all of a sudden they're thinking,

how do I parent out of the word of God?

240

:

That's now become such a source of

great joy and wisdom in my life.

241

:

And that's exciting.

242

:

Stephanie: Praise the Lord.

243

:

That's so exciting to hear.

244

:

It really will bless you, eternally

and really every year of your life.

245

:

I love hearing from leaders

that they watch that play out.

246

:

Sylvia: I also think is fantastic

is the scripture memory and how that

247

:

becomes family scripture memory.

248

:

It's not just mom learning the Bible

verses, the kids are learning them,

249

:

they're singing them together, the

family's listening to them in the van

250

:

as they go places, and suddenly now

instead of mom's Bible study being

251

:

mom's It's a shared experience with

the family and they can all go back to

252

:

the verses they've learned together.

253

:

And that's so precious to me.

254

:

I love watching that.

255

:

Stephanie: Oh, it is so sweet.

256

:

And that the kids know where

are our rules coming from?

257

:

They're coming from the word of God.

258

:

My mom didn't just pull

this out of thin air.

259

:

There is a basis for this that

makes it so much more powerful

260

:

Speaker 6: it is been amazing to see how

creatively different groups have worked

261

:

out the schedule for Entrusted while it

was created to be a school year study

262

:

ideally running from September to April.

263

:

We have seen churches.

264

:

Do January to December

and break for the summer.

265

:

I'm actually piloting a group.

266

:

I'm actually piloting a group right now

at my church, and it's going great, but

267

:

we're doing a totally different model.

268

:

And another group just came on board

saying, we really wanna get these

269

:

truths rooted in the mom's hearts.

270

:

We're gonna take a really slow

approach and go through it over

271

:

the course of several years.

272

:

We can make this work for you.

273

:

See, we won't compromise.

274

:

On the authority of scripture.

275

:

Or the value of a mother but

we can flex on the timeline to

276

:

make this work for your church.

277

:

All right.

278

:

All the links are in the show notes.

279

:

You know what to do.

280

:

Generally, I close our

podcast praying over the moms.

281

:

So I'd just like to take

a moment to pray over you.

282

:

Heavenly Father.

283

:

We thank you for these shepherds

and servants of your kingdom

284

:

Strengthen them when there is so

much vying for their attention.

285

:

Give them clarity.

286

:

And direction about what you

would have them prioritize.

287

:

We pray.

288

:

They would hear, encouragement

more than criticism.

289

:

Build your church family by family

generation after generation.

290

:

It is in the matchless name

of Jesus Christ we pray.

291

:

Amen.

Stephanie Hickox

Stephanie has always delighted in God’s Word and in sharing it with others. Whether it is equipping mothers and leaders through Entrusted with a Child’s Heart, inspiring students when teaching at homeschool co-ops or children’s ministry, or homeschooling her own children, Stephanie’s life mission is to encourage others to follow faithfully and joyfully after Jesus—especially if they hold her favorite job title: mom.

Betsy Corning wrote Entrusted with a Child’s Heart in 1999 in response to the needs she saw in families as she and David counseled young parents just a few years behind them. Entrusted has been taught in hundreds of churches nationwide, been translated into several foreign languages, and has made its way around the world. More recently, Betsy received her Masters in Biblical Studies from The Master’s University and is developing a new Bible Study program called Get the Word Out. Her passion for God’s Word, discipleship, and teaching biblical principles as they apply to family life has remained strong to this day. One of the greatest blessings in Betsy’s life are her three grown children, their spouses, and ten grandchildren that keep her constantly in touch with every age and stage.

Jen Freckman Is an incredible wealth of wisdom. She will tell you a natural remedy for just about anything! She is also a voracious reader and she is just overflowing with quotes and guidance that she's encountered through reading and being faithful. She delights in her children and is a devoted mother. She is also an amazingly creative problem solver! Her solutions to manage her home and guide her children are inspiring.

Emily Deyo is such a treasure. She is an incredible encourager and servant-hearted woman. When she has the mic in front of her, so much value comes out! She is a wordsmith and her heart consistently beats for how she can encourage and serve others. She is a truly loving and attentive mother.

Join Betsy, Emily, Jen, and Stephanie as they share the wisdom only Scripture and on-the-job training can provide to help untangle the joyful calling of motherhood.
