#117. SNEAK PEEK: COUPLES LESSON #1: Teaching Kids About Jesus | A Gospel-Centered Parenting Conversation

Raising Children for Christ Starts With the Gospel

Welcome to Again Podcast — because what moms do over and over matters to God.

In this powerful episode, Stephanie Hickox sits down with Betsy and David Corning to talk about the true foundation of Christian parenting: faith in Jesus Christ.

What does it mean to be entrusted with children by God? How can moms faithfully point their children to Jesus in the ordinary, repetitive rhythms of motherhood? And what hope is there for parents who feel like they started too late?

Together, this conversation explores the heart of biblical parenting, discipleship, and salvation—reminding weary moms that their children ultimately belong to the Lord, and that God faithfully works through imperfect parents who depend on Him.

This episode also includes a clear Gospel presentation through the “Bridge Illustration,” walking step-by-step through Scripture to explain:

  • Why we were created for relationship with God
  • How sin separates us from Him
  • Why Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation
  • What it means to repent and believe
  • How the Gospel transforms motherhood, marriage, and family life

Welcome to the Again Podcast from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, and I

wanna say congratulations, mama.

3

:

You made it through another May.

4

:

Whether you're wrapping up an academic

school year or you've felt cooped

5

:

inside with babies and toddlers

6

:

for what feels like forever.

7

:

I hope that this summer has lots of joy

and relaxation on the horizon for you.

8

:

Today, I'm giving you a sneak peek into

lesson one of our Entrusted videos.

9

:

These go along with our book for couples

which has the same principles as the moms'

10

:

study in Trusted With a Child's Heart.

11

:

We call it our book for couples, but

really it can be used by individuals,

12

:

by home groups, church groups,

groups of men, groups of women.

13

:

There are so many opportunities.

14

:

I have several friends that actually buy

these books for every baby shower they

15

:

attend, as they believe it's the most

important parenting book you could own

16

:

And we recently recorded these videos

because we wanted moms and dads to have

17

:

videos to guide them through the book.

18

:

And to gain access to the entire

series, all you have to do is purchase

19

:

the book, which is reasonably priced

at $20, and then we give you this

20

:

little bookmark that has the QR code

to stream all the videos for free.

21

:

We really want to equip and your spouse to

follow God's Word in your parenting, and

22

:

ultimately, we want people to come to know

the Lord Jesus Christ as their Savior.

23

:

So we hope today's clear bridge

illustration can equip you

24

:

for how you can clearly share

25

:

the gospel with your children and

anyone else God puts in your path

26

:

, Speaker: Let's talk about chapter

one, our foundation, faith in Jesus.

27

:

I was rereading Paul Tripp's parenting

book recently, and it's so in line with

28

:

the heart of Entrusted, and I loved this

quote, "Good parenting, which does what

29

:

God intended it to do, begins with the

radical and humbling admission that our

30

:

children don't actually belong to us."

31

:

Aunt Betsy, can you explain what

does it mean to be entrusted?

32

:

Speaker 2: I think it means to

understand that your children

33

:

don't really belong to you.

34

:

They've been entrusted to you by God,

which, uh, absolutely is an absolute

35

:

precious and special privilege,

but we don't look at our children

36

:

as our own in the sense that I get

to do with you whatever I want.

37

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

38

:

Speaker 2: I get to raise you however I

want, because God has given them to us

39

:

for a purpose, and that is to fulfill his

purpose of raising true worshipers of God.

40

:

Speaker: Mm.

41

:

Speaker 2: Children aren't ours.

42

:

Uh, they are the Lord's.

43

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

44

:

Speaker 2: So we're being the

best stewards of them that we can.

45

:

Speaker: And there's incredible

freedom in that, when we know that

46

:

we're working with the Lord, onto Him.

47

:

It's not all on our shoulders, right?

48

:

Speaker 2: Yes, definitely.

49

:

So what a relief it is to know

that God's in this with us.

50

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

51

:

Speaker 2: And when we follow His

ways, you know, He, He honors that.

52

:

He blesses that.

53

:

Speaker: You've subtitled every chapter,

"Godly parents do this," and chapter

54

:

one, it's, "Godly parents embrace

Jesus as their Lord and Savior."

55

:

Some people might hear that and

feel, "I don't know if I'm worthy

56

:

of that title, godly parent."

57

:

Can you explain why you've

chosen those subtitles?

58

:

Speaker 2: Yeah.

59

:

It's not really us, ourselves,

that have the capacity to be godly.

60

:

I mean, we are obedient unto the

Lord, but it's saying that we are

61

:

declaring our dependence upon Him to

be able to do the things that He's

62

:

calling us to do in our families.

63

:

So godly parents means we're

aligning with the Lord in this task.

64

:

A godly parent in that s- situation

declares that Jesus is Lord and

65

:

Savior of their, their lives.

66

:

Because if we don't have that

first foundational piece-

67

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm

68

:

… Speaker 2: our families are gonna

struggle, as Psalm 127:1 said, which

69

:

is, "Unless the Lord builds the house,

they labor in vain who build it."

70

:

When I've talked to women, you

know, how sad would it be to say

71

:

that we raised our children for 20

years, and we did it all in vain?

72

:

Mm.

73

:

That would be so heartbreaking.

74

:

But the Lord says, "No, I, I'm going to

give you my manual, my handy book of the

75

:

Bible," which really isn't about us, but

it's how to live in fellowship with Him

76

:

as He intended from the very beginning.

77

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

78

:

Speaker 2: And David will get into

that a little bit, but I think

79

:

that's, uh, some important things

to understand from the beginning.

80

:

Speaker: Uncle David, can you speak to the

people that are listening to this saying,

81

:

"I didn't have people pouring into me.

82

:

I wasn't discipled.

83

:

I didn't understand these Biblical truths.

84

:

Was I parenting in vain?

85

:

Is it too late to start now?"

86

:

Speaker 3: Well, the answer to that

would be no, it's not too late.

87

:

It's never too late.

88

:

I just have to say this carefully, but- I

don't know of a more important role that a

89

:

father could have in his children's lives,

and there's probably no one on the face

90

:

of the earth that could impact them the

way their own father could impact them.

91

:

So if you started with them really

early, or if you're just s- wanting

92

:

to do something now, get in the game.

93

:

Speaker: Hmm.

94

:

Speaker 3: Uh, get involved.

95

:

Um, be with your kids.

96

:

Look them in the eye.

97

:

Ask them the questions

that need to be asked.

98

:

Get off the superficial and into the

things that really matter in their life.

99

:

So no, I, I would say that

it's never, never too late.

100

:

God can bring anyone out of any given

situation, uh, and use it for His

101

:

glory, and He often does use it for

His glory in the worst of situations

102

:

'cause he, He just turns people's lives.

103

:

He can turn a father's life around

who's been neglecting his family

104

:

possibly, or He can obviously do

that with the child through, uh,

105

:

the father's ministry to them.

106

:

Speaker 2: And I think a mother's heart

and a father's heart- Mm-hmm … is to

107

:

never, ever give up on their children.

108

:

And I know that I've talked in other

s- situations, in other lessons, about

109

:

how at a certain point of life, your

prayer life becomes really, really

110

:

ignited, and I would say that's in your

older years when you see the absolute

111

:

importance of these things and you're

praying for the spiritual foundation

112

:

of your children and grandchildren.

113

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

114

:

Speaker 2: Um, and new marriages

being formed in your family.

115

:

You know, a lot of people say, "I don't

have a strong p- prayer life," but

116

:

I would say that if you're following

the Lord, you will- Mm-hmm … if

117

:

you, uh- Have a heart for your family.

118

:

And there's a verse from First, uh, 3

John 4 that says, "I have no greater

119

:

motivation than this, than to hear

that my children walk in the truth."

120

:

That will be no more true than when

you're older and you've seen how

121

:

a lot of things have played out.

122

:

And we don't want to live with regret,

but we don't feel like it's all on us.

123

:

We do our best.

124

:

We do our best, and we trust

the Lord with the rest.

125

:

And we also know that our children have

a responsibility in these things, too.

126

:

Speaker: I really like how you

clarify that idea in the mom study,

127

:

that as parents we're called to

evangelize and edify, and God's

128

:

part is to save and to sanctify.

129

:

And when we realize that, we,

we can be faithful and diligent,

130

:

but the Lord's drawing him.

131

:

He's faithful to draw our children.

132

:

And with that, Uncle David, will you

share the bridge gospel illustration

133

:

that I've seen you share m- many

times, and I know you're just

134

:

You always have this ready- Mm … for

wherever the Lord would give you an

135

:

opportunity, you're ready to proclaim

Jesus Christ as the only answer.

136

:

Speaker 3: This is the foundation that

I think the Lord is, I know the Lord is

137

:

talking about in 1 Corinthians 3:11 where

He says, "There's no foundation other than

138

:

which is laid, which is Jesus Christ."

139

:

And so the Gospel is the foundation

of my life, it's the foundation of

140

:

my family, it's the foundation of

my marriage, it's the foundation

141

:

of everything I have and hope for.

142

:

There's many ways to, to

share the Gospel with people.

143

:

Um, this was a way that I was taught

how to do it about 50 years ago.

144

:

Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.

145

:

Speaker 3: I always loved it

because it kind of takes the Bible,

146

:

and it starts you in Genesis, and

it finishes you in Revelation.

147

:

And it's a kind of a summary

of what the Bible is all about.

148

:

And of course, the Old Testament

points to Jesus, the New

149

:

Testament points back at Him.

150

:

It's all about Jesus Christ.

151

:

If you miss that, you can memorize that

all the kings in the Old Testament, you

152

:

can know all the a- apostles in the New

Testament, you can know a whole bunch

153

:

of facts, but if you miss that Jesus

Christ is who He is, you missed it.

154

:

So it starts out with Genesis

1:27, where he says, "God

155

:

created man in His own image.

156

:

In His own image He created them.

157

:

Male and female He created them."

158

:

Right there- We see that God created

humans, men and women, in his own image.

159

:

We are different than any

other part of God's creation.

160

:

We're, we're, we were created

to have a relationship with God.

161

:

If you look at Genesis 1 and 2,

you see God is walking and talking

162

:

with Adam and Eve in the garden.

163

:

They had a relationship.

164

:

They knew his voice.

165

:

He knew their voice.

166

:

They had a relationship.

167

:

They're different.

168

:

They were different than

trees and plants and animals.

169

:

All of God's creation is wonderful,

but people are very, very unique

170

:

because of the way God created them.

171

:

But then, obviously, problems began

in Genesis chapter 3, and there's a

172

:

universal truth in Isaiah 59:2 which

says, "But your iniquities have caused

173

:

a separation between you and your

God, and your sins have hidden his

174

:

face from you, so he no longer hears."

175

:

Well, uh-oh, what happened

to my relationship?

176

:

It- it's, it's been severed.

177

:

It's been severed by something

called iniquity or sin, and God

178

:

will not even … If I, if I try

to talk to him, he turns his face.

179

:

Well, that's a picture

of a broken relationship.

180

:

So now I really have to get specific about

what really is my problem, and it starts

181

:

in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned

and fall short of the glory of God."

182

:

So I'm a sinner according to the

Bible, not accord- Some people

183

:

won't admit that they're a sinner,

but I say, "God, you're right.

184

:

I am a sinner, for all have sinned

and fall short of the glory of God."

185

:

There's no one on the face of

this earth who is not a sinner.

186

:

So then the next question is,

well, what does sin result in?

187

:

"For the wages," in Romans 6:23

it says, "For the wages of sin

188

:

is death, but the gift of God is

eternal life through Christ Jesus."

189

:

What is the result of my sin?

190

:

I like to, the focus on the word wage.

191

:

Well, when you get a wage,

you've earned something.

192

:

You deserve something.

193

:

I deserve to die because of my sin.

194

:

That's the wage that I've earned.

195

:

Well, that's getting

pretty negative, isn't it?

196

:

It's, uh, I'm a sinner,

and now I'm gonna die.

197

:

And then the next thing that's even

worse is, what happens after I die?

198

:

In Hebrews 9:27, it says, "Inasmuch

as it is appointed for men to die

199

:

once, after this comes judgment."

200

:

Well, I'm going to be judged and condemned

for everything I've ever done wrong for

201

:

all of eternity in a place called hell.

202

:

That is bad news.

203

:

But you know, I really have to, anyone

really needs to focus on that because

204

:

if you don't understand your problem,

you'll never find the solution.

205

:

So, so that's my problem.

206

:

I'm a sinner, I'm gonna die,

and I'm gonna be condemned.

207

:

But now God has a response to that.

208

:

John 5:24, he says, "Truly, truly…"

209

:

Anytime he says truly,

truly, pay attention.

210

:

"Truly, truly, I say to you, he

who hears my word and believes

211

:

Him who sent me has eternal life.

212

:

He does not come into judgment,

but is passed from death to life."

213

:

So basically, God, right there,

says three things: eternal life, no

214

:

judgment, passed from death to life.

215

:

He's addressed my problem

But you have to believe.

216

:

So how do I get from where I am

over here with my problem to over

217

:

here with, with how God responds

to my problem in John 5:24?

218

:

Well, a lot of people got a lot

of different ideas about that, and

219

:

we need to take the next passage

of scripture is Ephesians 2:8-9.

220

:

"For by grace you have

been saved through faith.

221

:

It's a gift of God, not as a result

of works, lest anyone should boast."

222

:

So it's by grace.

223

:

Grace is undeserved favor.

224

:

Okay, I already know what I deserve.

225

:

Please don't give me that.

226

:

I need God's grace through faith.

227

:

Okay, faith.

228

:

What's faith?

229

:

Well, faith is, I believe, and, uh,

there's a lot of good definitions.

230

:

Hebrews 1, uh, 11:6 is really

a good one, but, and 11:1 too.

231

:

But nevertheless, faith is

confidence properly placed.

232

:

Who am I depending on?

233

:

Who am I counting on?

234

:

And whoever you put your faith in, it

better be in the right place because

235

:

it, there's only one way you can be

saved, and that is really brought out

236

:

by the next verse, which is John 14:6.

237

:

"Jesus said to them, 'I am the

way, the truth, and the life.

238

:

No one comes to the

Father but through me.'"

239

:

So you need to put your faith

in Jesus Christ because He's

240

:

the only one able to save you.

241

:

He's the only one able to deliver you

from your sin and forgive your sin.

242

:

So that brings us into our next

verse, which is 1 Peter 3:18.

243

:

"But Christ died for sins once for

all, the righteous for the unrighteous,

244

:

that he might bring us to God,

because he was put to death in the

245

:

flesh but made alive in the Spirit."

246

:

That passage of scripture is so

powerful 'cause it says so much.

247

:

The righteous Jesus Christ in my place

for the unrighteous, me, the sinner who

248

:

deserves to die and to be condemned.

249

:

He went to the cross in order that

He might take me from that position

250

:

across that sin chasm that, that's been

e- that, that e- that exists because

251

:

of my broken relationship with God,

and makes me have hope for salvation.

252

:

And the reason that I have hope for

salvation is because He rose from

253

:

the dead, and that's the power.

254

:

You, you put your faith in

somebody who won't let you down.

255

:

So Jesus, if He didn't rise from the dead,

256

:

we're kinda stuck.

257

:

But he did.

258

:

He's got power over life.

259

:

He's got power over death.

260

:

He has the power to forgive sin.

261

:

The next verse that I, that

I, that comes in the, in the

262

:

illustration is Romans 10:9.

263

:

"If we confess with our mouth that

Jesus Christ is Lord, and we believe

264

:

in our hearts that God raised him

from the dead, you will be saved."

265

:

S- so what do I need?

266

:

I need to confess and I need to believe.

267

:

Confess simply means, "God, you're right."

268

:

I'm a sinner.

269

:

I was created to have a relationship

with you, but you, but I fell,

270

:

and I have a sin problem.

271

:

You're right, and that's gonna cause

me to die and eventually be condemned.

272

:

But I know what you said over here.

273

:

You told me that I could have eternal

life and I could pass from death to life,

274

:

and that there would be no judgment.

275

:

So yes, thank you.

276

:

You're right.

277

:

You're right.

278

:

I agree with you, and it's by faith and

through, through, through your grace

279

:

that I could possibly hope for salvation.

280

:

So I confess it with my mouth

and I believe it in my heart.

281

:

Now, believe is much more

than just knowing something.

282

:

Believe is acting upon what I say is true.

283

:

So if there's sin in my life that I'm

aware of and I need to start working on,

284

:

because I need to work on it for the rest

of my life, but nevertheless, I work on

285

:

the things that God wants me to work on

so I can become more and more like Jesus.

286

:

And that is this process that we have

to get involved in, uh, right away.

287

:

And he will deliver us, and that's

the place, and that's the real belief.

288

:

And, you know, the Bible talks a

lot about repentance, and you could

289

:

almost use believe and repentance

hand-in-hand in that situation.

290

:

So then, I'm almost done, uh,

then you come to 1 John 5:11-12.

291

:

"And this is the testimony, that

God has given us eternal life.

292

:

This life is in his Son.

293

:

He who has the Son has life.

294

:

He who does not have the Son

of God does not have life."

295

:

So you either have it or you don't.

296

:

I, I like to, make this verse cause a

crisis in someone's life because you're

297

:

not, "Well, maybe I'm a Christian," or, "I

think I'm getting there," or, "I'm," you

298

:

know, "I'm kinda halfway in the middle."

299

:

No.

300

:

You're, you're not halfway anywhere.

301

:

You're either perfectly lost or

you're perfectly saved, depending

302

:

on what you have done with Jesus.

303

:

Have you humbled yourself?

304

:

Have you expressed your faith and your

need of him to be your savior and Lord?

305

:

If you've done that, you have Christ.

306

:

If you haven't done that, you don't have

Christ, and you're stuck over here with

307

:

your sin, the death that that will bring,

and the condemnation that that will bring.

308

:

So it's either one or the other.

309

:

The last verse is, I started in

Genesis, I'm finishing in Revelation.

310

:

Revelation 3:20, where Jesus says,

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock.

311

:

If anyone hears my voice and opens

the door, I will come in to him

312

:

and dine with him, and he with me."

313

:

Now, what's that?

314

:

That's a picture.

315

:

That's a picture of a relationship

Because God is sitting at a table with

316

:

you, dining with you, back and forth.

317

:

He's not turning his face

from you so he doesn't hear.

318

:

He's looking right at you.

319

:

He's talking with you.

320

:

You have a restored relationship.

321

:

So Jesus Christ has repaired what we

lost in Isaiah 59:2, that we, where that

322

:

relationship was broken, Jesus put it back

together so we have the Genesis 1:27 thing

323

:

again, where we have the, we were created

to have a relationship with God, and Jesus

324

:

Christ has made that possible through his

des- death, resurrection on the cross.

325

:

And so really we have now three

things that we could possibly do.

326

:

The first thing we can do is

say, "That's kind of stupid.

327

:

I reject that."

328

:

"Well, I don't think it's stupid.

329

:

I think I should think

about it, but not right now.

330

:

I'll just put it off."

331

:

Really, the first two are one and the

same, because you either have Christ or

332

:

you don't, and if you do either one of

those things, you do not have Christ.

333

:

Or you can repent.

334

:

You can turn from your sin.

335

:

You can put your trust and hope in Jesus

Christ alone, and he will be your savior.

336

:

So what are you gonna do with that?

337

:

Are you gonna come to Christ?

338

:

Are you going to humble yourself

and embrace your savior?

339

:

So that would be the foundation of

everything that we, that Entrusted

340

:

is about, that parenting is about,

is, that your marriage is about.

341

:

All these things are built on the

foundation of the gospel message.

342

:

And that's, like I said,

it's not the only way.

343

:

It's just one way of presenting

what the Bible has to say

344

:

about, uh, how to be saved.

345

:

Speaker: Mm-hmm.

346

:

Such a fantastic summary of the heart of

God to restore our relationship with him.

347

:

Mm-hmm.

348

:

That he is a God that dwells

and walks with his people,

349

:

would you close this lesson in prayer-

Mm-hmm … for the parent that's sitting

350

:

here listening and saying, "I need that"?

351

:

Speaker 3: Heavenly Father, uh, Lord,

if, uh, someone is listening to this-

352

:

And has not come to know Jesus Christ.

353

:

Father, it's not my words, it's your word.

354

:

Your word is living and active.

355

:

It's sharper than any two-edged sword.

356

:

It pierces between joint and marrow.

357

:

It's able to judge the thoughts

and intentions of the heart.

358

:

Father, I pray that you would open

people's eyes, that they would

359

:

see who Jesus Christ is, and they

would see and understand their

360

:

need for him, and they would simply

reach out and say, "Lord, save me.

361

:

I believe in you.

362

:

I trust you.

363

:

I want you to be a part of my life.

364

:

I want you to be my life, my hope."

365

:

So Lord, thank you, uh, for the work that

you're going to do in each person's life.

366

:

Father, I thank you that you are

sovereign God, and I pray and…

367

:

that you would use, um, maybe even

this little simple gospel presentation

368

:

to save someone's life, and it's

in your for the power to do that.

369

:

In Jesus' name we pray, amen

370

:

Stephanie Hickox

Stephanie has always delighted in God’s Word and in sharing it with others. Whether it is equipping mothers and leaders through Entrusted with a Child’s Heart, inspiring students when teaching at homeschool co-ops or children’s ministry, or homeschooling her own children, Stephanie’s life mission is to encourage others to follow faithfully and joyfully after Jesus—especially if they hold her favorite job title: mom.

Betsy Corning wrote Entrusted with a Child’s Heart in 1999 in response to the needs she saw in families as she and David counseled young parents just a few years behind them. Entrusted has been taught in hundreds of churches nationwide, been translated into several foreign languages, and has made its way around the world. More recently, Betsy received her Masters in Biblical Studies from The Master’s University and is developing a new Bible Study program called Get the Word Out. Her passion for God’s Word, discipleship, and teaching biblical principles as they apply to family life has remained strong to this day. One of the greatest blessings in Betsy’s life are her three grown children, their spouses, and ten grandchildren that keep her constantly in touch with every age and stage.
