Try some of these tips to see if you can naturally ease your child's discomfort, but of course turn to the experts when it's needed.

Stay warm, Mama!

(This episode contains solutions we ourselves have tried and had success with, but we encourage you to seek professional medical help when issues go beyond mild symptoms or when they are frequent and recurring.)

Transcript
Steph:

They're the joyful agains our children shout on the swings, the

2

:

exhausting agains of cooking and laundry,

and the difficult agains of discipline.

3

:

So much of what we do

as mothers is on repeat.

4

:

So what if we woke up with clarity,

knowing which agains we were called

5

:

to, and went to bed believing we

are faithful in what matters most?

6

:

We believe God's word is

the key to untangle from the

7

:

confusion and overwhelm we feel.

8

:

Let's look up together to embrace a

motherhood full of freedom and joy.

9

:

Thanks for joining us for this

episode of again, brought to

10

:

you by entrusted ministries.

11

:

I'm your host, Stephanie Hickox.

12

:

And in today's episode, I'm joined

by Jen Frackman, as she shares some

13

:

truly helpful natural solutions.

14

:

Although we hope everyone's

staying healthy in your house.

15

:

We know that winter sickness is so

prevalent and we hope that you and your

16

:

kiddos can find some relief and some help.

17

:

Through these readily available options.

18

:

Steph: All right, Jen, in our homeschool

community, you are known as Nurse

19

:

Freckman or Nurse Jen to some of us, and

even our kids know when we have questions

20

:

about what to do that you will have.

21

:

A great solution.

22

:

And what I love is so often it's

something that I already have in

23

:

my home or something, that I feel

really great about giving my kids.

24

:

I would really love it if you could

guide us through a couple symptoms

25

:

and say when my child starts to feel

this, this is what I turn to first.

26

:

Let's start with ear pain.

27

:

I think that's such a tricky one

because we can't see it, right?

28

:

Jen: Yes.

29

:

Steph: I've been very tempted to buy an

otoscope or something just so I can see.

30

:

They're telling me it hurts, but

it could be so many things oh,

31

:

Jen: Dr.

32

:

Mom.

33

:

You can get them on Amazon.

34

:

I think they're like 15.

35

:

And I would look, even when

my littles were very little, I

36

:

would just look in their ear.

37

:

a number of different times throughout

a day or the week, just to get to know

38

:

what their ears look like normally.

39

:

And then as their ears started to have

ear infections or ear pain, I would

40

:

know what looks differently for them.

41

:

And so, you can tell, I'm not a doctor,

so none of this is medical advice, but

42

:

Steph: we have to have

the caveats, don't we?

43

:

Jen: Exactly.

44

:

But you can tell, if there's

redness or just different things.

45

:

So I would, I would look in their

ear with one of those scopes as well.

46

:

And then I would also depending

on what it was you can get little.

47

:

Eardrops of moulin oil.

48

:

I believe that's how you pronounce it.

49

:

And garlic oil, warm garlic oil.

50

:

I've even made my own where I just crush

up some garlic and let it very, very

51

:

slowly simmer on the stove top to get

it warm and then let it cool until I can

52

:

put it on my wrist and it's not at all.

53

:

Warm or too hot.

54

:

And then I would just

drop that in their ear.

55

:

Sometimes I'll do a warm salt sock where

I take like really coarse Himalayan

56

:

salt and I put it in a clean sock.

57

:

No, the most important part

is the clean sock part.

58

:

And then I'll take it and either put it

in the warming tray or on the stove top

59

:

and just heat it up a little bit and

get it warm and put that on their ear.

60

:

And that soothes it very quickly and

well, and just helps blood flow go to

61

:

that area because of the heat, drawing

the heat there increases blood flow.

62

:

Depending on if they have a cold,

then I, might do a neti pot for

63

:

them to help them get their sinuses

so that that gets out of their.

64

:

Nasal passage.

65

:

Also, I would lift the back of their

ear there's a bone right behind

66

:

your ear a large circular bone.

67

:

And I would rub that and then press

down as I rubbed and go down their

68

:

neck, and that would just help.

69

:

drain, whatever is in there.

70

:

And it would usually feel good to them.

71

:

So those, those are the things

we do for like ear pain.

72

:

Steph: I still remember a friend

saying, yep, I walked into Jen's house

73

:

and she had socks in a frying pan,

and I was like, ooh, tell me more.

74

:

Jen: yes,

75

:

Steph: So yep, so I've tried

it and it works amazingly.

76

:

I've used Epsom salt usually but it,

it definitely does have to be coarse.

77

:

You're right.

78

:

Otherwise, it's a mess.

79

:

And you have to watch it to make

sure you don't cook too long.

80

:

Jen: Yep.

81

:

Steph: and the garlic oil

drops are really helpful.

82

:

I've done mixing melaleuca with lavender

and coconut oil and just rubbing

83

:

that around the outside of the ear.

84

:

And that's really helpful too

and, something I already have.

85

:

Jen: Yes.

86

:

Steph: I love that you studied your

children's ears, and they're healthy and

87

:

that's so wise to get a baseline, right?

88

:

Jen: it helps so much because, and

everybody's ear looks differently.

89

:

Like I didn't, I had never looked

into an ear before, so I didn't know.

90

:

And then I was like, Oh,

this is your normal ear.

91

:

Okay.

92

:

And then just recently Josiah had a really

bad ear infection and I could see Oh

93

:

my goodness, this is, this is inflamed.

94

:

I can see why you're in pain.

95

:

And yeah, it was pretty cool to see.

96

:

The inflammation go down and to see the

things that we were doing helping and

97

:

we never had to take them in for it.

98

:

So that was nice.

99

:

Steph: that's great.

100

:

And most ear infections are caused

by a virus and not a bacteria, right?

101

:

Even though they're commonly treated

with antibiotics, that's not going

102

:

to kill what's causing it usually.

103

:

Jen: Yep.

104

:

Steph: so it's helpful to have something

that will provide relief as you're

105

:

waiting for those germs to be defeated.

106

:

Jen: Yeah.

107

:

Steph: What about if one of your

children has a bruise or a bump or

108

:

hurts themselves in some sort of injury?

109

:

Jen: Yeah.

110

:

Our favorite is Arnica gel and they have

topical cream that you can put on or even

111

:

when that's it dries really quickly cause

it has like alcohol in it or something.

112

:

So we just rub that on and that really

does help a lot that's my favorite.

113

:

You can also get little borion tablets

of arnica that they can take internally.

114

:

They're like little tiny itty

bitty little circle balls that

115

:

they just put under their tongue

and that goes right into their

116

:

bloodstream and , that helps as well.

117

:

But topically, I don't

know if it's what it is.

118

:

It just helps them.

119

:

I don't know how it works.

120

:

I just know it does.

121

:

Steph: The palettes, it's so funny because

some of the Latin names sound like,

122

:

this sounds like hocus pocus, argentum

natricum, and you're like, I feel like

123

:

you're saying I'm tricking myself, but.

124

:

I, I've taken them myself even, for

like dental pain or something like

125

:

that and you're like, well, even if

it's a placebo, it's working, like

126

:

I feel better, so I'm okay with it.

127

:

Sore throats are quite

common this time of year.

128

:

What is your remedy for that?

129

:

Jen: I love Manuka honey.

130

:

Really good quality Manuka

honey lemon essential oil.

131

:

If you just take it and put it in

right back wherever that soreness

132

:

is, there is something to that that

just quickly can take that away.

133

:

Throat coat tea is one

of my favorite teas.

134

:

I, I actually like the flavor of it.

135

:

Some people.

136

:

It's not their favorite, but I enjoy it.

137

:

That really does help a lot.

138

:

And B propolis spray is

my ultimate favorite.

139

:

We will spray that and just get it back

as far back in the throat as you can.

140

:

And those typically will

soothe and help whatever that

141

:

irritable sore throat thing is.

142

:

If I feel it is strep, then I take

it a little bit more seriously and

143

:

I'll either go get it checked to see

if it is strep and then I know what

144

:

to do with different homeopathic

or different natural antibiotics,

145

:

like oregano or garlic oil or.

146

:

Colloidal silver, whatever

it is that we want to do.

147

:

But I don't like to mess

around with straps, so.

148

:

I will get them tested for that usually.

149

:

Steph: Sure.

150

:

Great.

151

:

we've tried bee pollen, but I've

never tried the bee propolis spray.

152

:

That's interesting.

153

:

Jen: Yeah.

154

:

It's super helpful.

155

:

That's actually one of my favorite sprays.

156

:

Steph: It's exciting to try these things.

157

:

You don't want your kids to get sick,

but you, you want to see this stuff work,

158

:

Jen: yes.

159

:

Yes.

160

:

Steph: Okay, and what about stomach aches?

161

:

Okay.

162

:

Jen: that's huge because.

163

:

Whatever it is their body's having a hard

time digesting, it will help assist their

164

:

body and into digesting whatever that is.

165

:

Digestive enzymes help

activated charcoal, that helps.

166

:

You can even take a capsule of that and

open it up and put it in grape juice

167

:

and shake it up and have them drink it.

168

:

They don't need a lot.

169

:

A little goes a long way.

170

:

Magnesium, typically, if they're,

constipated, then I will give them

171

:

magnesium, give them a magnesium bath.

172

:

Magnesium is best absorbed transdermally,

so having lotion or a bath or rubbing

173

:

lotion on their tummy, that will help as

well but also taking magnesium, whether

174

:

it's a drink or a pill, something like

that, to get some of that moving for them.

175

:

We also love castor oil packs.

176

:

Anytime they have a tummy ache and

it just comes out of nowhere and I

177

:

don't really know what to do, I'll put

castor oil on organic flannel cotton

178

:

and then I tie it around with a,

just a organic bow thing that I have.

179

:

It's like a ribbon and we'll put a heating

pad over top of it for a little bit and

180

:

let that sit on their tummy for a while.

181

:

And most often that

will take the pain away.

182

:

Steph: Wow.

183

:

Castor oil also works best transdermally

184

:

Jen: Yeah.

185

:

Yeah, I have only used it on

topically, so I haven't taken it.

186

:

I, I'm sure that there's things you can

do, but I haven't researched that as

187

:

much, but topically it will increase blood

flow and it will reduce inflammation.

188

:

And so it takes pain away and

it does work relatively quickly.

189

:

Even for things like tummy aches,

headaches Olivia had a migraine this

190

:

afternoon and I put Some on her forehead

and the heating pad on her forehead.

191

:

And she said, mom, it feels so much

better, but it didn't take it away

192

:

completely, but it did reduce the pain.

193

:

Steph: That's excellent.

194

:

Thank you, this is so helpful.

195

:

And like I said, it always

brings me such peace to have

196

:

things in my home that I can do.

197

:

Historically, my kids always

get sick 10pm on Friday night

198

:

Jen: Yes.

199

:

Steph: and you're like, the

doctor's office isn't open!

200

:

And then you think, do I really

want to take my little child into

201

:

an ER or an urgent care so, having

things we can do at home is so nice.

202

:

Jen: Yeah.

203

:

Steph: And then often it's resolved

by Monday morning anyway, and then

204

:

Jen: Yes.

205

:

I know.

206

:

Children do not get sick 9

to 5 Monday through Friday.

207

:

It just doesn't work.

208

:

It's like any off hour is

when they're going to get it.

209

:

Steph: Yeah, for sure

well, thank you so much
